Acupuncture
What is it?
Acupuncture is believed to have originated thousands of years ago in China and is well known to be associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body.
What does it do?
This treatment is used to help a wide range of things, from neck pain to hay fever and even bed wetting! People believe that blockages the body's life energy also known as "Chi" result in illness or disease and that acupuncture tends to restore this flow of "Chi" which in turn allows the body to return to harmony.
What happens at the treatment?
The acupuncturist should explain what they will do and what type of effects the treatment will have on you. Then you will be asked to,lie down and to remove some clothing. The acupuncturist will then insert sterilized thin needles into parts of your body, normally your feet, ankles or back. When the needles are being inserted you should not be in pain, you should just feel a slight sensation or a tad of soreness.
The treatment normally lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes and you should attend at least six to ten sessions to feel the benefits.
How much does it cost?
Normally, one acupuncture session costs around $40-$80 but this depends on the location and experience of the acupuncturist.
Are there any side effects?
There should be no major side effects with acupuncture if it is carried out bey a professional. However, you may have have minor side effects such as:
- Slight drowsiness
- Mild soreness around parts where needles have been inserted
- Slight bruising
- Small amount of blood
If the acupuncturist is not a professional then major side effects will occur such as damaged internal organs, thus you must ensure that the person is registered with a professional acupuncturist institution and is properly trained.
