Alexander Technique
What is it?
The Alexander technique was created by Frederick Matthias Alexander who was an Australian actor. As a child, Alexander had respiratory problems which affected his voice and career. In order to cure this problem he studied his posture and soon discovered that his body alignment was all wrong and decided to correct. By doing so he corrected the problem with his voice and was cured. Thus, the technique aims to improve your posture, balance and movement in everyday life.
How does it work?
The Alexander technique teacher uses their hands to adjust any muscular imbalances which allows the body to be better aligned. At first these adjustments will feel a bit abnormal because your muscles will not be used to working in this way but you must be prepared to use the muscles in these specific ways in your everyday tasks in order for your posture to improve. These sessions normally last 45-60 minutes and the teachers also recommend that you practice twice daily for about 10-20 minutes. You should attend 5-10 lessons normally once a week, however, if you like the lessons you can attend for many years!
How much does it cost?
An Alexander technique session normally costs anything from $35 depending on the teacher's experience and location.
Are there any side effects?
There have not been any side effects from the Alexander technique apart from the odd muscle ache.
