Aromatherapy
What is it?
Aromatherapy is a method that is used to relieve stress and balance the body's energies. It is also being used more and more for cancer patients and in sports therapy. It involves the use of essential oils from the natural environment, for instance, trees, flowers, leaves or roots.
How does it work?
The essential oils are normally massaged into the skin or inhaled through vaporizers. It is also possible to have them in baths or even through our house through diffusers.
An aromatherapist will assess you and decide what oils or combination of oils will help you the most. You will then be asked to undress and will be covered in towels. The oils will be massaged into your body from anything from 20-90 minutes. Most people who use aromatherapy tend to have the treatments at least once a week, fortnightly or monthly.
How much does it cost?
The cost of receiving aromatherapy can cost anything from $35-$150 depending on what type of massage you get.
Are there any side effects?
There may be a few side effects associated with aromatherapy such as:
- Feeling of drowsiness
- Irritation to the skin if the oils are not in vegetable carrier oil before hand
- Can be toxic if swallowed
- Allergic reactions can be possible so test the oil on the back of your wrist before the treatment
- The oils may also interfere with prescribed medicines so check with your doctor if you are taking medicine
